Terzo Valico dei Giovi: first eight kilometres of line activated between Rivalta Scrivia and Tortona

Alessandria, December 23, 2023 – The first 8.5 kilometres of the new railway line of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi/Genoa Junction One Project between Rivalta Scrivia and Tortona were activated today. The new tracks represent the final, northbound section of the new HS/HC line that the General Contractor led by Webuild Group is building on behalf of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the lead company of the Infrastructure Cluster of Gruppo FS Italiane and the Client of the entire work, together with Italferr, entrusted with the high supervision and direction of the works, under the coordination of Government Commissioner Calogero Mauceri

The new line will ensure the strengthening of freight traffic on direct lines to Milan and Turin. It will allow for an increase in the modal share by rail, with a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The junction on the Alessandria-Piacenza route will allow freight convoys to reach the Rivalta site, further promoting the development of the fundamental key logistics hub for the area. From January 15, regional trains serving travellers between Arquata Scrivia - Novi L. - Pozzolo - Tortona - Milan will also run.

The work, which led to the complete renovation of the freight yard, was divided into several phases, always ensuring the full functionality of the yard itself and its accessibility.

The Rivalta Scrivia station, in the first half of 2024, will also be reactivated for passenger service. The rail yard will concomitantly be equipped with a modern fire-fighting system to handle the transportation of dangerous goods, further expanding its market potential.

Technological interface works, including the commissioning of two new state-of-the-art technological apparatuses for rail traffic management positioned at Rivalta Scrivia station and near the renovated "Bivio Tortona," were carried out by the Saturno Consortium (Hitachi Rail, Alstom Ferroviaria, Colas Rail Italia and Mermec STE). The line will be equipped with the most advanced digital signaling systems, made by Hitachi Rail.

The Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction One Project (among the PNRR works), will allow trains to travel at a maximum speed of 250 kilometres per hour through the provinces of Genoa and Alessandria, to the cities of Milan and Turin.
